Man Steals Ambulance With Patient Inside

Sun Times Media Wire

Chicago - A man jumped behind the wheel of an ambulance and took off with it — while his family member and two paramedics were inside Saturday morning in the West Garfield Park community on the West Side.

At 11:30 a.m. ambulance No. 23 was stopped in the 4300 block of West Wilcox Avenue treating a person in the back when the incident occurred, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

“ A family member jumped in the ambulance and took off with it,’’ Langford said.

The paramedics, a man and a woman, immediately radioed it in, and said: “This is ambulance 23. Our ambulance has been stolen and we are in the back with a patient,’’ according to Langford. The paramedics were “somewhat agitated,” but handled the situation professionally, Langford said.

The motorist — a family member of the patient who may have been trying to drive to a hospital — began driving northbound on Kostner.

“He probably thought he was helping,’’ Langford said.

Fire Truck No. 26 which was already in the area and had gone on the medical run with ambulance No. 23 jumped into action and stopped it about three blocks away.

“Truck 26 heard the ambulance taken over, so they made a u-turn and made it to the intersection of Madison and Kostner where it blocked the ambulance,’’ Langford said.

Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said the patient in the ambulance was being treated for a diabetic episode at the time of the incident. MacGregor said the motorist may suffer from mental issues.

The driver was taken into police custody and the patient was taken by another ambulance to the hospital, according to Langford.

No one was injured and there was no wreck at the time.
